Chap. 3 T. An .Expfttion upon the b'eoke of. J o a. t'eri. 28. Y whether it be a truth taken exclufively as to all otherJudges, that is a Qpeffion. Godwill punifh Idolaters, and hewill punifh them forely and fe.verely ; yet to refirairethe text toGod alone fltut- ring out any otherfrom having cogcifänce in this m-irter,1 fee no realun for it, but rather much reafon to the contrary. kirit , 7ob feemes toput it as a fpecialtie upon this gin ofIdo- latry beyond manyother fins that it is a fin to be purdhed by the lodge ; now if by the Judge wee urderitand God alone, ex- cluding all otherJudges, then there is no more ffsid of this fin theta of any oilier. For God will ;udge all the fins ofall men all the world over (Ecc1:12.14) He ¡hall bring every worke into 7rtdge- went, with eve>y fecret thug, whether it be good, or whether it be e- vill; and as a Judge he will punifh the fins of all thofe uho goe on impenitently in them, yea they ¡hall be under the everlattung punifhmcnt ofthat judge; let the fin be what it will, let it be the leaft lin imaginable, if any one live and dye in it without rcpen- tance, without takinghold ofChrill by faith for he pardon ofit, God will udge and punifh that man for it eternally. So that, I fay, there is nomore fpokenof this fin,in that fence, then is corn.. peteat with or common toany other fin whatfoever. Yet 7ole icr this place feemes to fpcake fomewhat more of it then falls upon every other fin ; andwe know there are a number offins punifh- ableby God,whichyet neyther cannor ought to be punifhed by man. Man cannot punifh many fins becaufe he loth not know them; and there are many fins which he ought not to- punifh, though hedoe know them; becaufe they are not in his comcniflì- on to take notice of. Further, fecondly, thereare force fins punifbabie by man, of which the Scripture fpeakes as if God only did punifh them. (Heb. 13.4.) (Marriage is honourable among all, and the bedun- defiled, but whoremongers and adulterers god will 7adf,e. And it bath been (hewed in opening the 24th Chapter of this booke, how eminently God appeares in judgement even in this life a- gainfi that fort offinners. Yet though God is fpoken of in that Scripture as the only Judge ofwhoremongers and Adulterers, yet no man will denybut that Adulterers are to be punifhed by manalto. Thirdly,I conceavep gives ú difitinetionof fins in this Chap- ter, whereofform are punifhed by God alone, and others 1 oth by
