536 Chap. y t . .din .Expofsticn upon the ßeof¿e of J o B. Ver11.28. I need not goe any further fora proofe then the Text, though I doe not re lraine all panifhable Idolatry to that particular way mentioned in the text, the woiflipping of the Sunne,Moone, and Starres ; but I ay, any idolatry of that rank and rate, is tobe punilh.d by the Jude. To cleare my meaning in this we may diltinguifh of Idolatry. rirlt There is Idolatry improperly fo called ; which is the inordinate going forth ofthe faille to anycreature, in love, inde. fire, in delight,in truft or confidence; this kind of Idolatry was fpokenofat the 24Th verfe ; ifI have made Goldmy hope, or have fad to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence. Thus the Apoftle ( Eph: 5. g. ) calleth a covetous man an Idolater. Secondly , Proper Idolatry is the fetting up, and worfhipping. .ofa falfe God; This is, fiddly, Idolatry againft the flrft Com- mandement; And This is not only a worfhipping of the creator by the creature, but a worfhippingof the creature for the cream tor. Of this the Apoftle fpeakes ( Rom. I. ay.) who change the tá-uth ofgod into a l; e,andworfhip andferve thecreature more tben.. the creator, who to bleffedfor evermore.
