66z Chap.3 L. An Ex)oftion upon the Book of J o B. Verf.33, his way; Thou ffhaltPave a foule, that is, his foule, and hide a eoulritude offin', that is, ofhis fins ; as if he had fayd, thou (halt be a meanes ofbringing him to a fight ofhis fin, and fo tohum- ble him felfe before God and feeke the pardon of them, which is the only true and happy hiding and covering ofthem. Thus I have (hewed foure coverings of fin,and in all there fen- ces, it is good for us, tohave our fins covered. Bleffed are they whole fins are covered by the free favour of God, by the righte- oufneffe of Chritl, and by the wife charitieof their brethren, ey- Cher not divulging them, orconverting the finner from them. But there is a finfull way in which fin is covered, or there is a covering offin, which is both the fin and mifery of man; fuch a coveringof fin as will cover him with fhame and confufion of face for ever. And that's it which yob difclaimes. He fought and fought doubtleffe with all his foule to get his fin covered with the mercy ofGod, with the righteoufneffe ofChrifl the redee- mer,but t;e durenot make acover for fin himfelfe; IfI covered eoy tranfgrefons. The word notes great or greatest fins, even rebellions and blaf- phemy ; by both which that fpeech of (Chap. 34.37. ) is rendred, and our tranfiation takes the former, For he addeth rebellion unto hiefinite. To rebel is more then barely to fin , Re- bellion is impudent and pertinacious finning. Many fin, who (in ftri& fence) doe not rebel; they that rebel fin with all their might. They not only doe evill , but doe it againft the light of goodcouncell givenby, others, and againft the light oftheir owne confciences. How finfull are they, who adde rebellion to their fin ! Some take it thus here , I have not covered my tranfgrefons or my greatfins ; As if lab had fayd, Ihave net hid the roorff of my felfe, I have not only not f ught to conceale my common fraileties, but not my fouleff /pots, and greatefl' rebellions againfi God. Many, are free to confeffe leffer fins, but they prepare coverings for their gróffe enormities. So that if we take the word trarrfgrffons, i this peculiar fignification, it much advanceth and advantageth vox Hebeaa the fincerity of ?obi heart in this profefiìon. f i ktigiro Yet I fuppofe we are not tied to that ftricaneffe ofthe word in pates Ut eva.Trf this place. And we find it fometimes ufed to expreffe ordinary leviora crirnMa comrh, ndat. fins and common faylings in other placesofScripture. ( Pro. i o. Druf° 19.)
