Chap. i I g9 CHAP. XI. Queßions, and Cafes of Confcience about f me of the Antinomian Erreurs. - -rte He Antinomians fay ; That through the blood-(lied and ri, htecsufncide of Chrifl in their free Juftifrcation. God fees no fin in them, and therefore they fhould fee no fin in rhemfelves ; Ot if they do fee it with the eye of lteafon, yet they fhould not fee it with the eye of faith. Quell. Is this true Doctrine? t Anf.No; for the bloodofChrist was never fhed todefiroy all fence and fight of fin in believers. But he died rather CO make them fenfible of their fins : For he died to fave his people from their fins, i John 3. 5. Tit. 3. 14. but by the f ,,,ht of fin they come to be weaned from it, and fo faved out of it : and hence it is, that the greateft and deepefl fpirit of mourningfor fin is pou- red out upon believers, when God hath poured upon them the Spirit of grace, Zach. Ia. io, i I. andgodlvforrowworks repentance, &c. 2 Cor. 7. so. The blood of Chrift whichwas flied for the killing of fin, makes them fenfible of their fin, with the aggravations of it, being nownot only againfl the Law of God, but againíl the blood and love ofthe Son ofGod. The contrarydottrine isvery falfeand pernicious. Quell. VYhether is the Law given as a sole to believers under the Cqo- fpel f Anfm. Yea, as may be proved by thee Arguments. Fiat, if fin the tranfgrr f on of the Lam, as the Apoftle affirmes it to be, I john 3. 4. then a believer is bound to attend theLaw as his rule, that fo hemay not tranfgrcffe it : as Daviddid, Pfal. 119. t I. For whofoever makes confcience of fin, cannot but make confcience of obferving the rule : and they which lay afide the rule, cannot make confcience of fin, which is down- right Atheifm and Profaneneffe. Perquisu, a great Libertine in Calvin: time, makes this only tobe fin, viz.. to fee, know, or feel fin, and that the great finofman is to think that he doth fin, and thatthe old man is put offbynot fee- ing fin. But there are liars, t `ohn i. 8, so. Secondly, a true believer, though he cannot keep the Law perfesly as his rule, yet heloves it dearly, and blames himfelf when he cannot keep it, and N cries I.
