1. H. Qxefiionr, and Cafe.rofCoafcience Chap. it7 Objet. A Believer bath repeuted in Chrill, and mortified fin in Chr,f fo that mortification, and vivification is nothing but a baieving that Chrifi bath mortified fin forts, and been quicknedforus , andfantlification that is inherent in I Chrifì,and not in so ,is the evidence of our juflifcation ? /Infw. Firll, this principle confounds a Chrd}ians juflification , and fan&ifi- cation, as it calls the feed ofdenying all inherent graces in a believer, and lays the bafis refuting todo any duty , or conform to any Law in our own perlons. and it will follow , that as the perfectionofChrills righteoufnetíe to our lullifi- cation , lhould make us abhor any righteoufnelleofour own to our juflificati- ou : fo ifwe be perfe&ly fandlified inChrill, then perfe&ion of Chrills rihte- oufnelle to our fan&ification, lhouldmake abelcevcr not only renounce the Law , but abhorre all perfonal ri hteoufneffe through the fpirìtto our fan&i- fication: and then a Believer mull abhor to feek any love , or fcarc of God in his heart , which dìretly is an inlet to all manner of prophan- neffe. Secondly, Chrill indeed is our fan&ification, as well as our righteoufnefíe , I Cora .3o. but not materially, and formally, but virtually, meritorioufly, and (with meet explications ) exemplarily. Our righteoufnefíe to our juftification is inherent in him, but our fan&ificuron is inherent in our felves , thoughde- rived from him : Hence we are never commanded to jullifie our felves , unlefs it be inflrumentally , and Sacramentally, but we are commanded byfaith towalh ourfelves, Ifa.i.aS. e/IEl.22..1 6. weare exhorted torepent, tobelieve, to mor- tifie our earthlymembers,to walk in newnetíe oflife, &c. becaufe thefe things arc wrought in us byChrill toour fan&ification, but not wrought in Chrill for us as our righteoufnefte to our juftification. Objet. They that are in Chrill are ,laid to bs compleat in him , Col. 2. t o. and that they receive all grace from his follicle , lohn t. i6. therefore they have so grace in themfelves; but itsfirfi in him, and confequently their fantlifica- tien is perfeëled is km? Anf.Though the perfe&ion and fulnefleof grace is HI in Chrifl, yetbeleevers havenot all in him after one, and the famemanner , nor for the fame end : For our righreoufnefíe to our juftification is fo in him as never to be inherent in us, neither here, nor in heaven ; but our righteoufneffe to our fantifica- tion is fo far in him as it is to be derived tous, andhence it's formally in us, but virtually and mcritorioufly in him. Ob,e&. AChriflian mull do what iscommanded, but not by vertueof the com- mand, for thefpirìt will binde their hearts to the Lan',6ut they are not bound by any authority of the Lap to thedireElions thereof ; For the Spirit (" fay they) is free, and they are under the government ofthe Spirit, which is not to be control- led by any Law ? e4nfw. If their meaning be that a beleever is not boundby the command- ing power of any Law to conforme thereunto , only the fpirìt will conforme their heartsto it, fo that perhaps they {hall do the thing which the Law re- quires, but not becaufe theLawcommands is , then it will follow , that in cafe a belcever fall into any fin : as whoredome, drunkennefs , murder , &c. thefe wicked as though they be fins in themfelves ; yet they are not fo to him, becaufe he is now free from the Law, and not bound to obe- dienceby vertueofany command, and wherethere isnoLaw, there isno tranf- gretlion. Objet. TheLam is our rule as it wasgiven by Chrill, andnot at it was given by Mofes? 4nfw. The Law maybe confidered, either materially, as it contains the mat- ter -of-tbe Covenant ofWorks, and thusabeliever isnot tobe regulated by it: or it may be confidered finally , or rather relatively , as it flood in relationtCO
