Fourthly without diligence in a particular calling Superiours could not go- vern and provide for their inferiours : nor inferiors ferve , and pleafe their fuperiours according to the fifth Commandment : nor eitherof both provide for their health according to the fixth Commandment : Nor avoid idlcneffe, and the fruits thereof according to the feventh Commandment : Nor shun the crime of theft forbidden in the eihthCommandment:Nor preferve their good names provided for in the ninth Commnandment:but be ever coveting,and full of difcontent forbidden in the tenth Commandment. Jndeed its not poffible to reckon up all the fin`s sand dangerous difcomodities that attend upon them that either live without acalling, or thät'deate negligently, and carelofly in their calling : as appeares. Pro.6.t r.r 3.14 and24.3o. Quell. How may this be proved ? Anfw. By the wofull experience offuck as haveeither ufed unlawful callings, as Thieves, Cheaters, Gamefiers,Parafites,Stage-players, &c. Orelfe that have lived without a calling , who betides that they arecommonly unprofitable Cater- piliers , yeaburthenfom, and chargeable to others, they eithergrow profane in their lives, or fall away from the truth of religion into damnable fects , and erronious doctrines. Queff. How may we prove that diligent walking in ourcallings is fo acceptable to God? Anfw. Becaufe ashe that bath no lawful calling, or that walketh negligent - ly in one that is lawful , tranfgreffeth all the Commandments of the fecond Table, thereby highly difpleafingGod, and pulling a curfe upon himfelf : So 1 he that walketh diligently in a lawful calling , keeps Gods Commandments , and fo hath a promife of a bleffing annexed? to it , Lev. zo. 26. Deut. z8. 8. 'Prey. 10.4,22. Que$. Do all that walkpainfullyina lawfulcalling pleafe God? Anfw. No, except withal theyobferve thefe rules. 1. That fuch be true beleevers, without which its impolfible o'pteafeGod, Reba1.6. and fuch as arc careful daily to amend their lives. 2. They muff follow their earthlybufineffss with heavenly mindes : and fee that their worldly affaires do not jutfleout the feafonable performance of holy duties : that fo they may alto thrive in grace, and be good husbands for their fouls. 3. That they fofhunne unneceffary medling with other mens matters., that withal they be not foPhut up in their bowels, as to neglea their brethrens cau- fes, when dutyand confcience calls for their affiance. Queff. How is confcionable walking in ourcallings a furtherance to a god- ly life. Anfw. Secondly, Particular callings are Gods appointment for our own good, of our perfons, family, elate, and for the benefit ofothers alfo, and God gives us ,wif dome, and ability to manage them , as hedid to Bezaleel , Exed. 31.2. &c.
