ELSTOW, in Bedfordshire, is a rambling, picturesque, retired wayside village, with its rustic cross, its green, its maypole, and its hospitable hostelry of the " Rising Sun." It is not remarkable for af- fording grand or impressive beauty of scenery, though a pleasant place enough ; but it is a cheerful, homely spot. In a very humble cottage in this village, about a mile from Bedford, there lived, during the time of the Commonwealth, a most noteworthy man, with his second wife, and four young children-the offspring of his first marriage. He was a tall, strong-boned, though not corpulent Man, of perhaps thirty years of age, with a ruddy complexion, spark- ling eyes, massive forehead, and hair inclining to red; of a rather plain, yet agreeable appearance, and 5
