ANNE, COUNTESS OF PEMBROKE, and which bore an inscription telling the story of its erection. Her life of usefulness and example was extended far beyond the average span, for she was eighty-six years of age whel she died, on the 23rd of March, 1675,-" one of the most melancholy days," says her biographer, " the northern counties ever ex- perienced." With honest and unfeigned tears and regrets her servants and the numbers who had benefited by her charity followed her to the grave. She was interred in Appleby Church, when her funeral oration was delivered by Dr. Rainbow, Bishop of Carlisle.
