THE WORKER IN CHRIST'S VINEYARD. Some French officers being on parole at Stapleton, were constant visitors at Mr. More's house, and the result of this acquaintance was, that at twelve years of age, Hannah could speak French with ease and purity-an accomplishment then rarely possessed by girls in her station of life. When our little Hannah was about nine or ten years old, the family removed to Bristol ; and in 1757, Mary was considered to be qualified to open, with the aid of Elizabeth and Sarah, a school in Bristol, in which undertaking she acquitted herself admirably, although not yet in her twenty-first year. She took under her care Hannah, then inher twelfth year, to give her the benefit of masters in the modern languages ; and the little girl's early pro- ficiency and ready talents proved very useful, as she formed a brilliant example of the excellence of the instruction afforded in the establishment. Such was the success attending Mary's enterprise that soon families of the first respectability in Bristol were glad to entrust their children to the care of the talented sisters. These girls were excellently well adapted to take charge of young persons, and to work together. Mary was energetic, prompt, and decided, if indeed not sometimes slightly dictatorial and abrupt ; but what might have been a defect was tempered by a cheerful disposition. Elizabeth was charmingly gentle, sympathetic, and affectionate ; she was the chosen friend and counsellor of the juveniles. A I0
