That we rnuJi pray with upright hearts 8; he fpeaketh otherwife then he thinkethe This di- vorce of the heart and the tongue in all fpeech, even betwixt men, is deteftable : Pfal. 12. 2. it is called fpeaking, vith a heart and a heart:But when men (peak fo unto God it is ridiculous and impious :ridiculous, becaufe they go about to deceive God, who be- holding he heart as well as the tongue, feeth them dance as it were in a net: impious, becaufe it is not to lie unto men but unto God. Both which folly and impietie the Pfalmift noteth in the Ifraelites, Pfal. 78.36. That when the hand of God was upon them flaying divers of them, they fought him and called upon him : nevertheleffe they did flatter, or go about to deceive him , with their mouth, and they lied unto Lim with their tongues; for their heart wa%s not right with him. Here therefore two faults are to be avoided : the Praying with feigned lips one, praying with feigned lips; the other, praying to gbe avoid_ with wandring thoughts. He is faid to pray, with ed,and what feigned lips whofe lips agree not with his heart, nor it i' his words with his defires and thoughts:So faithBe- da, Labiis dolofis orat quis, ciam vox oris non convenit voci cordis;Aman prayeth with deceitfulllips, whet* the voice of the mouth agreeth not with the voice of the heart. This is to pray with ati heart and an heart, and thus prayeth every one which asketh that with his mouth which he doth not defire with his heart, and pretendeth that in his prayer which he doth not intend, which protnifeth that in his prayer which he meaneth not to perform, or praifeth God for that whereof his confcience doth not acknow- ledge either God to be the giver or himfelf the re- G z 'eeiver.
