9z That prayer ought to be in a blown tongue. him that Than fay that the Divine fervice ought one ly to be celebrated in the vulgar tongue: and yet this expreífely is the doctrine of the Apoftle, i . Cor. 14. From whence I reafon thus : Firft, That which the Lord by his Apoftle hath commanded to be done, that is neceífarily to be ob- ferved : But the Lord by his Apoftle hath com- manded that the facred fervice fhould be done in a language known, and not in a ftrange language un- known to the people. For what he there teacheth he teftifieth that they were the commandments of God, v.37. But let us heare the Popifh fhifts ufed to avoid the force of this teftimonie. The Papifis t. That the Apoftle fpeaketh not of prayer but ¡lifts avoided of preaching and exhortation, which they confeffe which they zife to elude are to be made in a known tongue, otherwife that the Apoftles they are unprofitable and edifie not. Why then by words, i.Cor. i 4, holy the fame reafon do they not reade the Scri- ptures in a known tongue unto the people, but hide the light of Gods word under the bufhel ofaftrange language e But I anfwer, That the Apoftle fpeak- eth of the whole Divine fervice of God,the Church as well praying and prayfing of God, as preaching and prophefying, v.14,1 5, t 6,17. Yea, but the Apofile fpeaketh of fuck as ha- ving the gifts of tongues , did pray in a tongue which themfelves knew not; and of them he faith, that in their fpirit, that is, in their affeuion,they dray; but their mind, not underfianding what they fay, is unfruitfrñll, namely to themfelves.
