But we know that in our felves we are unworthy, and yet believe that in Chrift we are accepted. Our faith is grounded not on our own worthineffe in our felves, but on the love and promifes of God, and on the merits and interceffìon of Chrift. For though we be finners in our felves, yet believing in Chrift, God the Father juflifieth us. Though we know not how to pray or what to ask as of our felves, yet God the Spirit makethintercefsiopi for us, in helping our infirmities, and teaching us to pray ac- cording to God. And though our praiers be unperfec`t and unworthy to be offered to God, yet Chrift our Saviour fitteth at the right hand of his Father ma- king intercefsion for us, Rom. 8.26, 27, 33, 34. and perfuming the incenfe ( that is the prayers of the faithful!) with the odours of his own facrifice, Revel.8.3. CHAP. XIX., of Humility requiredin prayer. Itherto we have fpoken of the mind : Now we are to enquire what is required in the heart. In the heart three things are requifite; humilitie, reve- rence, and heartineffe: The firft refpec`ting our felves; the fecond, God; the third , the things for which we do invocate.
