The third Petition. means? Doth not the holy Ghoft fay, That without holineffe we (hall never fee God, Heb. 1z. 14. That without regeneration we fhall never enter into the kingdome of heaven, John 3. 3, 5..' Therefore we cannot hope that Chrift his coming will be to our everlafling falvation , if we continue in our fìnnes; neither can we truly and earneftly defire his coming, except we have that hope ; neither can we truly make this prayer, except we have this un- feigned defire. 3. Thofe that are wedded to the world, and are fo farre from defiring the haftening of Chrifts coming that they do not onely defire to live here aiwayes but alfo fo behave themfelves as if they meant alwayes to abide here, placing their paradife upon the earth, and not caring for the king - dome of heaven. His petition is a confequent of the former :For I then doth God reigne in the hearts of men when they fubjeC and fubmit themfelves to his will. Therefore as in the former petition we defired that the Lord would reigne in us, fo here we pray that We may thew our felves to be his fubje1s by per- forming his will. For thefe two are relatives ; if he our King,thenwe his fubjeds. And therefore here- by we may difcern whether the Lord doth reigne in us, if we have a true defire and endeavour to do his will. And therefore our Saviour Chrift, Matth. 6. 33. as he Both bid us to reek, fir/i and principally the kingdom of God, fo alfo his righteoufnef. The
