324 The expofitionof thefourth Petition: The fourth Petition. Hitherto we have fpoken of thofe petitions which immediately concern the glory of How things God. Now we are to come unto thofe which more apperteimng nearly appertein unto our good : Howbeit medi- to our own good are to ately alto they are referred to Gods glory, which be askcd. mull be the main end of all our defìres: for whatfo- ever we are to ask for our felves we are to defire ono otherwife but as it is fubordinate to Gods glory, Spirituali graces and falvation we are to defire for the manifeflarion of theglory of his mercy in our falvation. And becaufe a Chriltian man is bound to believe that the Lard harh ordained him to falvati- on, therefore falvation and thofe fpirituall graces which are neceffary thereunto, may be asked abfo- lutely, as being fubordinate to Gods glory, with which he joyneth the falvation of the chofen. Temporali:benefi ts are to be asked conditionally,fo farre forth as they ferve for Gods glory and our fpirituall good. Gods glory is to be fought for even in our eating and drinking, and whatfoever we do, i. Cor. z o. 3 1. Nay, our life it felf is no orherwife to be defired then it is referred to Gods glory, Pfal.
