In refpeLl of which punifhment every offendour of the law is a debtour,untill either the debt be remitted him, or elfe he hath born the punifhment, which is without end. Whereas therefore we pray that the Lord would forgive us our debts, we do not onely defire that the Lord would forget the fault, but alto that he would re- mit the punifhment unto which the guilt of our fault doth bind us over. And therefore foolifh is the opinion of the Papifis, who hold that the Lord The rapifts many rimes forgiveth the fault and reteineth the w¡;óhó d punifhment. For finne is called a debtin refpeet of that God the punifhment which we ow for it: and there- forgiving the faultrc fore this debt is not remitted if the punifhment be teineth the reteined. Eve- ry finne therefore as it deferveth death, fo is it pu- nifhed with death, or elfe the juflice of God is not fatisfied. It is punifhed, I fay, by death either in the party himfelf to whom it is not forgiven, or in Chrift in the behalf of the party to whom it is for- given. For every finne therefore that is forgiven Chrift hath fatisfied the juflice of God in bearing the punifhment: therefore God doth not punifh them whole fumes he forgiveth in Chrift: neither can it (land with his juflice to punifh the fame finne twice, once in Chrifi, and again in the faithfull for whom Chrift hath fuffered.
