Thereafon There words are a folemn profeffion unto God our aith confirming ín 5 of our brotherly love, ferving both to confirm our theafiùrance faith in obteining pardon, and alfo to teflifie our of remitsion. love to God ( who hath forgiven us much) in the love of our brethren for his fake. For whereas divers men making this prayer for pardon of finne either do not believe at all the pardon of their finne, or elfe deceive themfelves with an opinion of faith, not loving him of whom they look for pardon, nor their brethren for his fake, but with the ungracious fervant Matth. 18.28. exa61 fmall debts of their brethren, and revenge offenfes committed againíl them, as though they could love God and yet hate their brother: therefore our Saviour teacheth us to adde to the petition this proteflation, that if we be able to make it in truth,we may be affured of the forgiveneffe of our finnes, and not be deceived (as many are ) in our affurance.
