3 3 of divers forts of temptations. ed are either the defires or the terrours of the world: For fometime the world allureth unto evil by pro - mifing good things, fometimes terrifieth from good by threatning evil things. The defires ofthe world, that is, the things defired in the world, (as in gene- rall, peace and profperity ; in particular, pleafure, profit, preferment, and glory in the world ) are ma- ny times fo many baits of finne, and fnares of Sa- tan : baits, in refpeet of the getting; and fnares , in refpe1 of the Wing of them. For finne, being in it felf ugly and fearful! if it fhould come in its own likeneffe, being the hook of the devil , therefore it is covered with the Phew fometimes of pleafure, fometimes of profit, fometimes of preferment, fometimes of glory, as with a bait, that the volu- ptuous man with defire of pleafure, the covetous man by coveting after profit, the ambitious man by gaping after preferment might fwallow the hook of the devil to their perdition. Men had therefore need to look unto the means of getting their defires : for when they cannot be got but by finne, they are the baits of the devil. In refpeft of ufing, they are fnares of the devil, whenas mens minds & hearts are intan- gled with them fo as they cannot mind or affea heavenly things. If they be called to the wor(hip of God and means of their falvation, they have their worldly excufes, as thofe in the Gofpel, Luke 14. 18. If they come to the worfhip of God, if they heare the word , if they call upon God by prayer, their heart notwithfrandinggoeth a whoring after their worldly defires, whereby they are fo fet- tered as that they cannot freely fet their hearts and minds
