III. of the 3. But now we are to fpeak of the tentations of devil, the devil, who is the principali tempter unto evil; and is therefore called the tempter, r. Theíf. 3.5. Matth.4.3. Now his tentations may diverfly be di- flinguiíhed. I. That they are either immediate or mediate : Immediate, when he calleth a wicked thought or concupifcence, as it were a fiery dart,in- to the mind or heart of man: And fuch are called the fuggefiions ofthe devil: Which ifthey be not ad- mitted, but refilled and prefently nipped in the head and extinguiíhed as a (park call into water, they hurt us not; but if once they being enterteined do take hold on us, they will both infect and inflame us, John 13.2. But for the moll part he dealeth by means,ufng either as his inflruments fometimes the fleíh, that is, 'mans own corruption;. and fometimes alfo the mediation of other men, as once he did the ferpent 5 or eife,as occafions and objets, the delires and terrours of the world. i. The chief help and inflrument of the devil is the flelh, that is, a mans own corruption; by which he hath all the advantage he hath againfl us.
