What is meant by, Deliver us from evil. By evil we are to underfland all the enemies of our falvation; the flefh, world, and devil, finne and hell, and all puniíhments offinne; but efpecially the devil, who in the Scriptures is called ó vnP9s the evil one. T6-mu, deliver, fignifieth two things : i. To keep and preferve, to proteé and defend from evil, that we fall not into it. In which fenfe Chrift is Paid to deliver us from the wrath which is to come, i .Theff. i . z o. And our Saviour making the fame prayer, ufeth in {lead of this word, resiv, keep or preferve, John 17.13. 2. Cor. r . I O. Which argueth , that of our felves we lie open and naked to our fpirituall ene- mies, unleffe it pleafe the Lord to keep and to pro - teft us from them. 2. It fignifieth to deliver, and as it were to pull us out of the hands, that is, power, of our fpirituall enemies : as the word is ufed, Luke 1. 74. Matth.27 ,43. (;U,ú,, let him deliver him. Rom. 7.24. Ts); who will deliver me ? 2.Tim.4. r 7, 18. Which teacheth us, 1. that naturally we are in fubjedion to our fpirituall enemies; 2. that it is not in our power to free our felves out of this bondage; but it is the mercifull work of the Lord, of whom we are therefore taught to crave deliverance. This deliverance which we crave is either incho- ate in this life or perfed in the life to come: both by Chrift; Luke I.74. Duties in prayer.
