That Godalone is to be called upon. ready to heare and to grant then we are to ask, Ifa. 65. 24. On the other fide, prayers made to crea- tures are made neither in faith: For there is no war- rant in the Scripture for fuch a prayer, no dotrine which teacheth it, no precept that injoyneth it, no promife to confirm it, no example to commend it. And this is confeffed by Eckius, viz. That neither it is warranted or taught in the Old Teflament, be- caufe the people were prone to idolatry, and the fa- thers deceafed were in Limbo; nor in the New, left the Gentiles fhould return to their old idolatry, and left the Apoftles fhould feem to dired Chriflians to invocate them after their deceafe. And therefore by their own confeflion no teftimonie of Scripture can be alledged to this purpofe. Neither can fuch prayer be made in hope : becaufe none but God is either omnifcient or omniprefent to know the wants or heare the defires of men in all places calling up- on them , nor omnipotent to grant their defires. Hereunto may be added the teftimonies of the Fa- thers: Origen Contra Celfune, lib.8. Solos adorandus eFt Deus, God onely is to be worfhipped. Eufebius, Deprxparat. Evang. 4. 5.
