Chrifi alone is the Mediatour of Intercefsíon: unto God. And for as much as it was needfull that the juflice of God fhould be fatisfied in the fame na- ture wherein he had been offended, neither could obedience be performed to the law given to man, nor the punifhment due to the finnes of man be fa- tisfied but by man, neither could the righteoufneífe be meritorious for all, nor the price of ranfome fuf- ficient, if the perfon which fhould perform both were not God. It was likewife needful! that the mediatour who fhould reconcile us unto God and make us and our prayers acceptable unto him should be both God and man: therefore God in his unfpeakable mercy hath appointed and given his onely begotten Sonne to be our Mediatour, Advo- cate and Interceffour, who having affumed our na- ture fhould therein fatisfie his juftice and appeafe his wrath; and having performed perfecî obedience for us, and given himfelf a ranfome for our finnes, should afcend into heaven, and there fitting at the right hand of the Father fhould make intercefïiort for us, that both the perfons of fuch as believe in him and their prayers which call upon God in his name fhould be accepted of him. But as in the former points we were forced to prove two things, not onely that God is to be invo- cared, but that he alone is to be called upon, and not Saints and Angels ; fo in this we are by the like fu- perflition of the Papifls compelled to demonfirate two things: firft, that ChrifI is the onely Mediatour of interceffion; and fecondly, that we are alwayes to call upon God in his name.
