72 Contra Epìfi. I'arsnen. 2. cap. 8. Chrifl alone is the Mediatour of Intercef ions: particular they pray for any of us it is improbá= ble, becaufe they know not our perfons, nor heare our prayers, nor underhand our particular wants: or if they did, yet would it not follow that either we fhould pray to them, as I have !hewed before, or that we fhould delire the Lord for their merits and interceflîons to grant our defiles. Neither is it to be doubted, but what praifes or prayers they utter un- to God, they offer them onely in the name and me- diation of Chril, defiring that for his merits and in- terceífìon their invocation may be accepted. And in this fenfe Chrift alone is the Mediatour of intercefsion. So Auguftine (peaking of thofe words of S. John, i .Epih. 2. 1. faith, John doth not fay, You have an advocate for fo fhould he feparate himfelf from (inners: nor doth he fay, You have me for a mediatour ( as Parmenianus in a certain place tnaketh the Bifhop a mediatour between God and the people) for then what good and faithfull Chri- Bian could indure him who would look upon him as an Apofile of Chrift and not as Antichrifte And again, All Chrihians do mutually commend them - felves unto God in their prayers : pro quo autem nul- lus interpellat fed ipfe pro omnibus, hic unas verúfque mediator eft : that is , but for whom none interce- deth but he for all, he alone is the true Mediatour. Now that Chrift is the onely Mediatour of inter- cefsion as wel as of redemption itis evident;becaufe thefebeing the two parts of his mediation, and not two forts of Mediatours; the latter of intercefsion dependeth on the other ofredemption,as being the reprefentation of it unto God, and the application thereof
