78 That tale muff pray onely in the name of Chrift. fpe&ing their own unworthineffe or demerits, he would be pleated to heare them for Chrifts fake, and for his merits and interceffion accept of their prayers. The which includeth two things : 1., A delire that for Chrifts fake we may be heard. 2. A belief that for Chrifts fake we fhall be heard. Of the de- fire we are here to (peak; of the belief or faith af- terwards. That we are thus to pray in the name of Chrift, is proved , 1. by the commandment of Chrift, John 16, 24. 2. by his promife, John 16.23. and 14. 13, 14. 3.by his predidion,John 16.26. 4. by the pra- nice of the faithfull not onely fince the afcenfion of Chrift, who have alwayes ufed to conclude their prayers with this claufe, per Dominum nofirum flan Chriftum, through our Lord Jefus Chrift; but alfo before the incarnation,Dan.9. 17. for the Lords fit' ke. And this was diverfly figured in the law. For i. Whereas by the propitiatory which covered the ark Chrift was reprefented, therefore the faithfull when they were to pray turned their face towards the place where the ark remained. 2. Hereunto tended their facrificés, which were a figure of Chrifts facrifice , that for the merit there- of the prayers of them which did offer the facri- fice might be accepted. 3.
