Of the vanity of lborld y pleafures. 45 t rotes in flead of clothes; and being famifhed with hunger cannot haue the crummes of his table,or the leaf+ part of his needleffefuperfluities. By all which it appeareth that thofe worldly pleafitresare of little worth, Peeing the Lord doth fo plentifully bellow them vpon thofe who are moll vnwor- thie; and that they haue little goodneffe in them ; becaufe with a fparing hand he impartech them vnto the good, and fuffcreth thofe who arc voide of goodneffe to bee glutted with them. But how vainc and worthlefhe thefe worldly pleafures are, 4.Sec`1.3., it may further appeare, in that the Lordmore freely, and in That thebrtt. greater meafure befloweth them vpon the brutifh creatures, tip creatures then vpon thofe who are reafonable ; implying thereby that geßPt e laar- theyare fo baie and contemptible, that they are fitter for eartbyplea. heath then for men. And this may eafily appeare, ifwee con. fares. iider that the bruit creatures haue full freedome in the vie of their delights, hauingno law to limit them but their owne appetite, and confequently are priuiledged in their plea - fures from all finne, guilt and punifhment; whereas man is limitcdby the law,io as he dare not do what heelifl, butis pulled backe with feare when his appetite moil draweth him on, being fubiedlto punifhment when in his delights he exceedeth due meafure. Or if he defperately goe on, hee hath all his mirth marred with the pangs of an accufing con - fcience, and lofeth much of his prefent delight, through feare and expeélation of future punifhment. Againe, they are fo guided by inflintt of rature, and haue their appetite fo fully conformable to it dirc&ion, that they take delight in thofepleafures, which are vnto them moll gbod and pro- fitable; they ioy in that food which is moll fit fin. their non - raiment, and take plcafure in no more then will do them good ; they fatisfie in feafonable time their naturali lufts, and enjoytheir fportswhen itbefl pleafeth them ; they doe not compaffe their pleafures by fraud or iniurie offered to thole of their owne kind, norenjoy them enuying, orbeing enul- ed; their pleafures are free ¡from flame, becaufe they are free from fin,and haue not like men their delights damped with lookerson. They haue more flrength and health then men.
