175' having its feat in man, yet, in many refpeEts, as fame- way different from him, and added as it were to him, and set over him (as I hinted before) to be a guardian, zuitnefs, captor or cenfor, to take notice of him in all his a &ions and carriage. Let no man then (as the fife of it) think that ever he is or can be alone, fo long as he bath a Confcience within him : For he hath ílïl fomething to teftify for or againff him ; to reprove him for what is wrong, and to com- mend him for that which is right. And tho' many poor wretches are ready to think, and foolishly to fancy, themfelves to be quit and well when they blind or cauterize or bribe their Confcience ; yet it will be found to be Hill waiting on them, and watching them in all they do. idly, Obferve, That Confcience is a mofi divine thing. Therefore Paul taketh it to be more impartial than him- felf, and joins it with the holy Ghoft in tefifying. If it were not in fome refpeEt a more divine thing than the man himfelf, fuch weight would not be laid on it, and its teftimony. And if we look to thefe things (hinted at in the foregoing obfervatian) viz. to the immediate matter of it, God ; to the rule that it walketh by, his will revealed in his word ; to the end it dire&s to, . or enjoins, the honour of God ; and to the whole way of of its confidering and judging of things, not only as pleafant or externally profitable to us, but mainly as pleafing to God, and for his honour, as conducing to the advancing of communion with him, or conformity to him ; 'tis möff divine.
