W hen we ípeak of be- lievers more particularly trying of their way, we mean not only as to there things that are more dark and unclear, but alfo as to there that are moll clear : For,even in thcfe, after exa& examination, we may find out ground of chal- lenge for what is wrong in our end, or in our manner of doing ; and diftin& ground of peace for what is right; that we may be able with forne folid confidence to fay, This was wrong, and I have reafon to be humbled for it ; and this was right, and I may be quieted and com- forted in ir. 5thly, Obferve, That, tho' it be a difficult thing to win to a well- grounded refrefhing teftimony of a good Confer ence, yet, by a tender believer, it is through grace attain- able : Paul fpeaketh of it here, not only as a thing that he aimed at, bur as that which he attained. The experience allo of many of the faints does prove, that it hath been win at ; as we may fee in Yob, David, Hezekiah, and o- thers : It is moreover clear from the effe &s that have fol- lowed on ir in them, fuch as peace, joy, and rejoicing; all which clearly hold forth fo much, that a believer in his walk may win to a well- grounded, and heart-cheer- ing teftimony of Confcience for him, if he be tender and watchful in his way to keep a good Confcience, and dili- gent in felf- examination, and fincere and impartial in put tine things to aproof, whether they be right or wrong° The ufe of us do &rive ferves for inflru&ion, to let us fee, that to win at fuch a teffimony of our Confcience is pofibie ; and, from the confideration of the poffibility of it, it ferves alfo to encourage us to feek after it If Con- fcience be made of felf- examination, it is not a heartlefs,. hopelefs and deiperate buiinefs, as many, take it to, be, who think (and it may be they have juff ground for that thought, having to evil a Confcience) that it neither will nor can fpcak good to them; but it will cer-
