Tics wipe rvesi Wiry ver na:r, oue of love ; the was tenderly affe &ionate, and very real in her going about that work : This will feclude many good works on the matter, which are called,in this fame epiffle, dead works, becaufe not done in the loving, lively, fpiri- tual manner that God requires. 4. An honed walk mull be from an honed principle ; tho' it were poffible, that a man could do all things called for never fo well for the manner, if they he not done from a right prin- ciple, he is not honed in his walk ; and 'tis on this ground that all the duties of natural men, of merely moral men, are reje &ed, as having no honeffy in them (as being but the fruit of corrupt trees, which can bring forth no good fruit, as the Lord exprefly affirms) and therefore can have no influence on a good Confcience, becaufe from a corrupt principle. We need not Band here particularly to prove the branches, they being obvious : To live ho- neffly, takes in all thefe four, without which a man can- not have a good Confcience ; as we fappofe will be gran- ted, at Ieaft in word, by all. The next thing to be cleared, is the univerfality of this honeffy ; how it is, that a man in this honeff walk (muff be univerfal : A good Confcience muff have this pro perry, and he that would have it muff needs Rudy to live honefily in all things ; in things of the firff table of the law, ;arid in things of the fecond ; in things that concern the law, and in things that concern the gofpel : Tho' a man fhould fludy never fo much external holinefs, if he ne gle& the exercife of repentance, of faith, of mortificati- on,and of other inward gofpel- duties, or graces, he is very defe &ive, and purfues not an honeft walk, in the ju(ly extent and latitude of it. So then, a man that would live honeffly, muff ffudy to be honeft in all ; not only in du:. ties of religious worthip, but alío in the duties of his cal: ling, ffation and relation, even in every thing ; whereof we had occafion to fpeak more particularly and fully in the clofe of our laff fermon. For further clearing of this univerfàlity, take there qua- lifications of it ; fzrfi, This univerfality mutt be cleft ;ned and endeavoured, in refpe& of mens light and judg- inent, to which their walk mutt be anfwe rable : A man
