'Tis only this uni- verfal refpe& to God's commands that prevents fhame, and gives the believer boldnefs and therefore it mull needs be a good evidence of, and have a great ftroke and influence upon, a good Confcience. The ;d thing in the do &rine to be cleared is, what is meant by willingnefs, and a hearty purpofe to be uni- verfal in the pra &ice of holinefs, or of an honeft life and walk ? whereupon, as on its bate, we faid, the great ¡hers of the evidence lies ; and therefore we would clear it the more fully : And, that we may do fo, we (hall, Premit forne diftin &ions of willingnefs, that we may know of what willingnefs it is that the apoile means, 2dly, We limit confirm both parts of the do&rine, after forne few things premitted. 5d1y, We thall thew where- in this willingnefs confifs, and what are its chara&ers. For the farfi, we would have you to diftinguith, i. Be- twixt a willingnefs in reference to the end or benefit itfelf, and a willingnefs in reference to the raids whereby that end or benefit is attained ; betwixt willingnefs to have a quiet Confcience as to the end, and willingnefs to live lhoneftly as the mids. There is nothing more common a- mong people, than to think that they are willing to have heaven, and to have Chrift that they may get heaven They think they are very Pure that they are very wil- ling, and love well to be in heaven when they die, and leave this prefent world ; and yet, if this be put to a nar- row and juft trial, it will rather be found to be a willing- nefs to have force benefit, than to be at the rids that leads to it : They would have Chrift, peace with God and heaven, becaufe they are good, and men naturally have an appetite and defire after good; but a delire towards the mils, that leads to the end, is a willingnefs to be at tht4
