may have a good Confcience, even when he faileth and cometh short in his duty, which would quite mar a legal teffimony of Confcience, or the teffimony of a legal good Confcience : Thus Paul hath a good Con f icnce, Rom. 7. 22. even when he is wrefiling againff fin, and crying out in the fight, O miferable man that I am, who /hall deliver me from the body of this death ? For he find- eth himfelf delighting in the law of God, after the inward Haan ; and that his defign is, to be honeff and Tingle for God. It is not fo much the challenge of Confcience, as that there fhould be ground for it, that afleci:eth and troubleth him ; when he thinketh with himfelf, What. may I, and muff I be before God, when Confcience taketh notice of fo many things to be amifs in me ? It is from this ground (I fay) that Paul comforteth himfelf, that he alloweth not himfelf in that which he did, and rec-- koneth his evangelically good Confcience, and his finceri- ty to be his renewed part, and, as fuch, fided and taketh part, with it, and condemneth the unrene.wed part. A 4th property; or charaaer, is taken from a believer's walking, in reference to his challenges : This is not the mark that he wanteth challenges, but its dawn from the influence that challenges have on them which compre- hends three different chara&ers, i. A gofpel good Con- fcience taketh quickly and eafily with a challenge, and is loon troubled and melted. z, It is made quickly to lothe and condemn itfelf for fin, and fo Confcience and the man agree well together ; when Confcience faith to him, Thou art a fanner, thou art loft, juffice muff be fatisfied, and thou canff not do ir, he faith fo like - wife. 3. When challenges put yet further at him, and purfue him yet harder and cloffer, the good Confcience makes him flee to the blood of Chriff, and Pets him a Peeking ofpardon from God, in the court of grace, when the man is force way condemned in the court of his own Confcience; and then he obtaineth peace, even in the court of Confcience : For, when God (peaks peace in and through Jefus Chrift, the Confcience alfofpeaks peace ; and thus, tho' the man hath not a good Confcience ira a law - fenfe (as I Paid before) yet in a gofpel -fenfe he high ; and he nnindeth to keep friendthip with God, and with
