COME now to the SECOND Thing appertaining to the 'Trial of religious Affeaions, which was pro- poled, viz. To take notice of fame Things, where- in thole Affeaions that are fpiritual and gracious, do differ from thofe that are not fo. But before I proceed directly to the diftinguifh- ing Chara&ers, I would previoufly mention fame desire may be obferved, concerning the Marks I T. That I am far from undertaking to give fuch Signs of gracious Affeaions, as shall be lufncient to enable any certainly to diftinguifh true Affection from falle in others ; or to determine pofitively which of their Neighbours are true Profeffors, and which are Hypo- crites. In fo doing, I should be guilty of that Arrogance which have been condemning. Tho' it be plain that Chrift has given Rules to all Chriftians, to enable 'em to judge of Profeffors of Reli- gion, whom they are concerned with, fo far as is neceffary for their own Safety, and to prevent their being led into a Snare by falfe Teachers, and falle Pretenders to Religion ; And tho' it be alto be- yond Doubt, that the Scriptures do abound with Rules, which may be very ferviceable to Minifters, in counfelling and conducting Souls committed to their Care) in Things appertaining to their fpiritual and
