278 1`he twelfth Sign PART M. Principle from whence they flow, is fomething divine, a Communica- tion of God, a Participation of the divine Nature, Chrift living in the Heart, the holy Spirit dwelling there, inUnion with the Faculties ofthe Soul, as an internal vital Principle, exerting his own properNature, in the Exercife of thofeFaculties. This is fufficient to fhew us why true Grace fhould have fuch Ativity, Power and Efficacy. No Wonder that which is divine, is powerful and effettival ; for it has Omni- potence on it's Side. If God dwells in the Heart, and be vitally u- nited to it, he will Phew that he is a God, by the Efficacy of his Ope- ration. Chrift is not in the Heart of a Saint, as in a Sepulchre, or as a dead Saviour, that does nothing ; but as in his Temple, and as one that is alive from the Dead. For in. the Heart where Chr ift favingly is, there he lives, and exerts himfelf after the Power of that endlefs Life, that he received at his Refurre6tion. Thus every Saint that is the Subjea of the Benefit of Chrift's Sufferings, is made to know and experience the Power of his Refurrea}ion. The Spirit of Chrift, which is the immediate Spring of Grace in the Heart, is all Life, all Power, all Ae`i ; 2 Cor. 2. 4. In Demonfiration of the Spirit, and of Power. I Thef. I. 5. Our Gofpel came not unto you in Word only, but alfo in Power, and in the holy Ghofl. I Cor. 4. 20. The Kingdomof God is not in Word, but in Power. Hence favingAffe&ions, tho' oftentimes they don't make fo great alloife and Show as others ; yet have in them a fecret Solidity, Life and Strength, whereby they take hold of, and carry away the Heart, leading it into a Kind of Captivity, 2 --Car. io. 5. gaining a full and fiedfaff Determination of the Will for God and Holinefs ; Pfal. I IO. 3. Thy People 'hall be willing in the Day of thy Power. And thus it is that holy Affeions have a governing Power in the Courfe of a Man's Life. A Statue may look very much like a real Man, and a beautiful Man ; yea it may have, in it's Appearance to the Eye, the Refemblance'of a very lively, ftrong and attive Man ; but yet an inward Principle of Life and Strength is wanting ; and therefore it does nothing, it brings nothing to pafs, there is no Aftion or Operation to anfwer the Shew. Falfe Difcoveries and Affeions don't go deep enough, to reach and govern the Spring of Men's Anions and Pra6tice. The Seed in ftony Ground had not Deepnefs of Earth, and the Root did not go deep enough to bring forth Fruit. But gracious Af- fe Lions go to the veryBottom of the Heart, and take hold of the very inmóft Springs of Life and Activity. Herein chiefly appears the Power of true Godlinefs, viz. in it's being effeEtual in Pra&tice. And the Efficacy of Godlinefs in this Refpeét, is what the Apoftle has Refpe& to, when he (peaks of the Power of Godlinefs, 2 Tim. 3. 5. as is very plain ; for he there is particularly declaring, how tome Profeffors of Religion - would notorioufly fail in the Practice of it and then in the 5th Verfe obferves, that in being thus of an un- holy
