PART III. of gracious Apetiions. 31I has an Heart to forfake all for Chriff, is his being actually put to it, the having Chriff and other Things coming in Competition, that he muff actually or praaically cleave to one and forfake the other. To forfake all for Chrift in Heart, is the fame Thing as to have a Heart to forfake all for Chriff when called to it : But the higheft Proof to our felves and others, that we have an Heart to forfake all for Chriff when called to it, is actually doing it when called to it, or fo far as called to it. To followChrift in Heart, is to have an Heart to fol- low him. To deny our felves in Heart for Chrift, is the fame Thing as to have an Heart to deny ourfelves for him in Fa&. The main and molt proper Proof of a Man's having an Heart to any Thing, concerning which he is at Liberty to follow his own Inclinations, and either to do or not to do as he pleafes,is his doing of it. When aMan is at Liberty whether to fpeak or keep Silence; the molt proper Evi- dence of his having an Heart to fpeak, is his fpeaking. When aMan is at Liberty whether to walk or fit fill, the proper Proof of his ha- ving an Heart to walk, is his walking. Godlinefs confifts not in an Heart to intend to do the Will of God, hut in an Heart to do it, The Children of Ifrael in the Wildernefs had the former, of whom we read, Deut. 5. 2.7, 28, 29. Go thou near, and hear all that theLord our God(hall fay ; and (peak thou unto us all that the Lord our God./ball fpeak unto thee ; and we will hear it and do it. .find the Lord heard the Voice ofyour Ll'ords, when yefpake unto me ; and the Lord Paid unto me, I have heard the Voice of the Words of this People, which they have fpoken unto thee : They have well Paid all that they have fpoken : O that there were fuch an HEAR T in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my Commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their Childrenfor ever. ThePeople manifeffed that they had akleart to intend to keepGod's Commandments, and to be very forward in thofe Intentions ; but God manifefts that this was far from being the Thing that he de- fired, wherein true Godlinefs confiffs, even an Heart aa`ivally to keep them. 'Tis therefore exceeding abfurd, and even ridiculous, for any to pretend that they have a good Heart, while they live a wicked Life, or don't bring forth the Fruit of univerfal Holinefs in their Praaice. For 'tis proved in Fa&, that fuch Men don't love God above all. 'Tis foolifh to difpute againft plain Fact and Experience. Men that live in `Ways of Sin, and yet flatter themfelves that they (hall go to Heaven, or expect to be received hereafter as holy Perfons, without a holy Life and Praaice, a& as tho' they expeaed to make a Fool of their Judge. Which is implied in what the Apoftle Pays ( (peaking of Mens doing good Works, and living an holy Life, thereby exhi- biting Evidence of their Title to everlafting Life) Gal. 6. 7. Be not deceived ; God is not mocked: For whatfoever a Manfoweth, that (hall he alfo reap. As much as to fay, 46 Don't deceive your felves X 4 46 With
