So they are abundantly called upon to exercife high Degrees of Gratitude for Mercies, to Praife Godwith all their Hearts; with Hearts lifted up in the Ways of the Lord, and their Souls magnifying the Lord, Pinging his Praifs, talking of his wondrous Works, declaring his Doings, &e. And we find the moil eminent Saints in Scripture, often profeffing high Affections. Thus the Pfàlmift fpeaks ofhis Love, as if it were unfpeakable ; Pfal. 119. 97. Oh how love I thy Law ! So he expreffes a great Degree of Hatred of Sin ; Pfal. 139. 21, 22. Do Inot hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? flnd am I not grieved with them that rife up againfl thee ? I hate themwithperfect Hatred. He alto expreffes a high Degree of Sorrow for Sin : He (peaks of his Sins going over his Head, as an heavy Burden, that was too heavyfor him ; and of his roar- ing all the Day, and his Moure's being turned into theDrought of Sum- mer, and his Bones being as it were broken with Sorrow. So he often expreffes great Degrees of fpiritual Defires, in a Multitude of the firongeft Expreffions which can be conceived of ; fixch as hisLonging, his Souls thirfling as a dry and thirfly Land where no Water is, his Pant- ing, his Flefh and Heart crying out, his Soul's breakingfor the Longing it math, &c. He expreffes the Exercifes of great and extreme Grief for the Sins of others, Pfal. 119. 136. Rivers of Water run down mine Eyes, becaufe they keep not thy Law. And Verfe 53. Horror bath taken hold upon me, becaufe ofthe Wicked thatforfake thy Law. He expreffes high Exercifes of Joy, Pfal. 21. 1. The King (halljoy in thy Strength; and in thy Salvation, how greatly Jhall he rejoice ! Pfal. 71. 23. My Lips (hall greatly rejoice, when IPing unto thee. Pfal. 73. 3-7. Be- caufe thy loving Kindnefs is better than Life, my Lips (hall praife thee.
