Security abainfd Death. 2 t 7 It is to inform our Judgement in the underftanding of there truths, and affent to them as truths, and to praêtife and followthem, to do the duties which we have heard, to praetife the Doctrine of Repentance, and Relieving, atad Obe- dience. I confers ourSaviour dpth proclaim it thus, Repent andbelieve the Galfiel: but for the More clearexplaining of it, we makenew Obedience a thing of it self, And not included intheDaélrene of kepentance: forit is an adt ofthatwhereofRepentance is a refolute withing and dcfiring. Aman cannot poflibly refs on Chrift for 'Alva lion, till he hath foasked pardon, as he refolvethan amendment : and whenht bath this refolution, and relyeth on Chrift for the pardon of his fin, then from him he re-, eeiveth power to amendment of,lifc, and fo his purpofe cometh to. a&ion, and his define to execution. Thus alone there two things c1itfr as far as I con- ceive. . Now I fay, this is the Dotirine of the Gaffe', and to keep it, is to know, and be- lieve, and follow it, to believe and obey; as Chrift faith, yfyuso know theft things ; there is one part of theduty, happyareyou ifyou do them: there, is a fcçond; for they can never be done, except they be done as known.. And thus I have inter- preted the first part of the Propofition, namely, the eArntecedent. Let us fay fomewhat of the lattertoo, the benefit that followetb upon the former duty, and for the obtainingof which the former duty is neeefrary, namely, that he Aganeverfiedeath, What is it to feeDeath ? And what Death is meanthere ? a.Thebentfit, To feegood things in the Scripture phrafe, iaas much oftentimes as to enjoy them'. to have thebenefit and commodity of them, to receive them, to entertain them Without holinefi no man fball fee God; that is, no man 'hall enjoyGod : Blefed are the poorOn sftrit, for they(ball fee God ; that is, they (hall enjoy God. On thecontrary, to fee a thing that is tearmedEvil, is to beannoyedwith it, to have the hurt of it lying upon a man , and preffhng him down : as they in ,3eremy Paid, Let us go into Egypt, wherewe Jhall notfeefword or famine ; meaning, that they Ihall not bepnrfued by war, and want of things needful fo that by teeing evil, is meant theevil lying uponone, and annoying andhurtingone : and fo I fop- pole it is meant here. .. And by Death, ismeant, Natural, and (as we may tcarm it,) fcipernatural, and eternal Death : For the keeping of Chriffsflings, fo freethmen fromthe latter, as they never come neer it: and fo freeth them from the former, as they never dread to be under the power of the latter. And the firft Deathof the onesardman, which is the reparation of theBody from the Soul,, it is no Death if it fep?rate not both from God, which it can never do, ifa man keep the laying: of Chrift : therefore though his body ( that keepetbthe laying: ofChrift,) betook from his foul, yethe feeth notdeath to as to have any hurtby it, he feeleth no ill by it : nay, it is good tohim, for it is a paffage frommifery to refs and felicity. Thus yehave there words es faithfully interpreted to you,as I know how. And now I willmake proof of this Doctrine thusexplicated, namely, that thus to keep Cbrìftslaying', to know and follow the Dottrineof the gold, is the onely lure way to efcape the dangerand hurt of Death. Saint Peteracknowledgeth as much, whenhe laid to theLord JefusChrift, that he had the words ofEternal life, then he that keepeth them is certainly fare againft the hurt ofDeath. So theAngel (peaks to the Apoftles whom the Pharifees had impri- Ifoned, when hebrought them forth of Prifon, he biddeth them fpcak to the people tbewardsoftlitlife: fenceChrif isDodrineis thewordoflifc, itmuft needs follow, I chat the keepingthereof is a perfeEt Antidote againft the poyfon of Death. And Saint Peter when he gave an account to the reif of the Apoftles, and the brethren offudea,of his going to the Gentiles, he faith that an AngelappointedCornelius to ;fend for him, that be might .beak words to . him, whereby himfelf and his family, F f fhotsld What it is to fee'satia.
