Here were theplcafures ofSolomon. But ( verf. 11. ) Behold ( faith he ) I looked on all the works that my hands hadwrought, and on the labour that I bad laboured to do, andbehold all was vanity, andvexation offpirit, and there was no profit under the Sun. Thewife Solomon that had been trying every creature, whe- ther it had any thing in it that might give hima true reliib, profefl;, that there was no profit under the Sun. Yet further ; thefe pleafures (hall ceafe, there (hall be an end ofthem, ( Cor.7.z9. The time rs fbort, itremaineth that thole that have wives, be eu though theyhad none they that rejoyce, as though they rejoycednot ; they that bay, as though theypoUeffed not; they that rife the world, as not abufng ofit ;.for the fajhion ofthis worldp nth away. . Laifly, our Saviour Chrift, inLuke 8.14. 1heweth that thepleafures of this life choak the word of God, that it cannot bring forthgrateful fruit toGod. Fourthly, if youngmen delight in riches, and rejoyce in their eftates that God, hath giventhem : this likewife is avain thing. For firft, many times; wealth is gottenby deceit, and thenGod bloweth on it, 5.27. As a cage isfullof birds,'fo aretheirhoufesfull ofdeceit, therefore they are become great and waxen rich : jball not 1 vißt for thefe things , faith the Lord e andfall not myfoul beavenged onInch peopleas this ? , Again, wealth is kept with much forrow, Ecclef. 5.12. The peepof the labouring man is fweet, whether he eat little or much ; buttheabundance of the rich will no: rApr him eapeep. Thirdly, wealth is loft with a great deal of forrow and vexation,Ree'.18.18. when . the fmoak of Babylon afcended up to heaven ; Oh what lamention. there was ! they cryed out, That city is likeuntoibis great city ? andthey cafi daft on their heads, and cryed, weeping andwailing, Paying; e4Ilas, ala,, thatgreat city, whereinwere made rich, allthat hat: 'hips in the [ea , by reafon of hercofilineft, for in one borer is fhemade drffate. But fuppofefurther, thata man fhould get,and keep his wealth in thefear ofGod,. yet thefe thingsare moftuncertain, as the Apoffle faith, 2 Tim. 1.16. Chargethem that are rich inthis world, thatthey trop not in uncertain riches. Laftly, thefc riches cannot preferve our lifer fo faithChrift himfelf, Luke 1z.z5,. Take heedandbewareof Covetoufnef, for no mans life ispreferved by the abundance ofthat bepoffeffeth. In the !aft-place. Ifyoungmen rejoyce in friends and Allies : thisalfo is a vam thing. For, Pfal. bz. y. Theneun of low degree is vanity, and theman ofhigh degree is a lie, to be laidin the ballante, theyare lighterthan vanity. Again, no friendcan deliver usfrom Death, Pfal. 49. 7, 8. No man canby any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ranfomefor him (for the redempnon of theirfoul is precious, andit eeafethfor ever) thathe fhouldfülllive forever, andnot fee corruption. Thus I halve (hewed feveral things that youngmen rejoyce in, and have !hewed likewife that their joy is founded uponvanity, upon nothing. And thisis the fecond means to healyoungmen of the inordinatenefsoftheirJoy, to meditate with them- felves how vain andfrivolous all thingsare that they-delight in. The thirdmeans is, to betake themfelves to leek fpiritual joy. Thewell-heedof this Joy is God : whom the Scripture calleth the Godofconfolation. The inffrument to convey thisJoy, is Faith, Rom. 5.1. Beingjufeifeedbyfaith, we havepeace wirb God. The grounds of thisJoy are two-fold. Firft, the good things exhibited. Secondly, the good things promifed. The
