Therefore thefecond thing that a manmutt do to awake himfelf out ofsleep, is to get faith in his foul, that hemay fuck vertue fromChrift, and to gethis fenfeslooted thathemay fee,and tafte,and feel the nefs ofGod, which without Chrift he cannot attain. Thirdly, and laftly, a man muff get out ofhis bed, to awake him out of sleep, when his eyesareopen and his fenfes loofed,leap out of thebed; that is by repen- tance : this is to craft to doevil. Therefore when the Apoftle exhorts to rife out of sleep, thefe are the three main things the Apoftledims at, wherein he exprefleth it plentifully. Firft,toget the true knovvledgeof God, to fee chofe obje&s that may allure,anddraw our minds. And then labour to get faith in theSonofGod, vvhere- by our fenfes may be unbound. And then to get oat of the bedoffinby repentance, to ceafe to doevil, and learn todo well: this is to avvake out of the bed of sleep. Thenatural man is in a fait, dead sleep; you fhail as loon get a rib out ofhis(ide ( as God did out of Adam, when he war ofeep) as vvakc him. You thall boner driven nail into his temples,as lad did to Sifera,then avvake him. He is in a fait dead sleep, in the sleep of death : as aman in a Lethargy that never vvakes again. There- fore this man had need to arife,to becalled upon, and tobe rouzedout of thesleep of death Awake thou that sleepeft, fland up from the dead, that Chriftmaygive thee light ; Arifeas aman arifeth out of theGrave, out of the bed ofsleep. This is the man that is in a dead sleep. But not only thefe are in a dead sleep, but the regeneratealto are in a sleep, and they keep not themfelves fo vvaking, and fo vvatchful, as theyought to do : there- fore the ApoRle applies it tohimfelf,and to all the Saints;ltietimefor us toawake out ofsleep. He puts himfelf in the number : For he that is moll vvakeful hadneed to bemore,and to rife out of sleep Rill. (ant. 5. It is the voyceof the Church ; I sleep but my heart waketh. Even the Church her felf thatvvas vvaked already in part, in a greatpart : yet the confeffed that the slept. Her sleepvvas not fodead, and fo fail as formerly,yet she slept,and slumbered; I sleep but my heart waketh. It vvas not a hearty, a dead sleep as the other vvas. So in Mat. 15. it is Paid ofthe wife virgins, as vycli as calthefoalofh, they allslumberedand slept. The fooli jis slept; that is, they vvere fait weep : the wife virgins they slumbered. And fo the Difciples themfelves, by the fide of our Lord, even vvhcn a temptation vvas near, and, the tempter vvas upon them, they fell fait afleep, and vvere not able to watchvvith Chrift, no, not one boar, as Chrift faith. Thus vve fee (brethren) that thofe alfo that are Regenerate, thofe that have re- ceived thegreateft meafure of grace, and are in the higheft form in grace (for vvho was higher than Saint Pail) they theamfelves have need tobe calledout ofbleep It is time for them to awakeout ofßeep, though they be waking perlons : even chofe that have received grace to believe, and obey, and be watchful in force meafure, even theft muff be called out of fleep. Therefore in Revel. ;. z. It is the counfel that is given to the Church ofSardis, that had received force grace, andwas in force meafure watchful: faith the holy Ghof to that Church ; Be awake, andfirentghen the things that artready to die.
