3 t o Saint Pa,uls Trumpet; or, ` t: Walling of time. 4. Decoyof natural heat. Exhortation ro awake from fleep. t. flitunpro- fitable. 2. It unItsfo duty. chis is a fagn of a sleepy perfon, in the main and principal chinos, his heart is not . upon them, krishands and feet movenot inthe wayes ofGod ; he works not to the principal end forwhich he"came into theworld. . Thirdly, you (hall knowa sleepy man bythis, he knovvs not of the paffing of the time ; but fo muck time as hesleeps he vvafles, it is as the time ofdeath to him ; for what is fleepbut the fbadowofdeath. Even fo. it is with many ofus, that profefs the 'teaching ofGrace ; Alas, how do wewafte time infenfibly ? and pafs awarhetime: Tome deck awaythetime, fome play away the time, dayes, and weeks, andmonths together, as if time werenot made for fome other bufinefs : as ifwe had received timefor filch imployments as thefe, for ourrecreations, and fports, and pleafures : and not rather that we might further our Repentance, and 'our [teckó- ning, and help the fervants ofGod, and get Oyl in our Lamps, and Faith in our Souls, and patience againftthetime oftrouble, and get affurance ofa bleffed inheri- tance, when we (hall be turned out hence. Time isgiven us for thefe ends andyet we (filly menas we are) devife paftimes to our (elves, as dour life did not pafs a- way, whereas fob faith, it is as a rr'eaver:fhuttle. Let usconfider Brethren, time will pals that we may improve it, andnotwafte our time. Fourthly and laflly, to conclude this Point, a man that is addiáted immoderately to fleep, you fhall know it by this, it deftoyes natural heat, and that being deftroyed by immoderate fleep, as by a fudden mighty shower, this man grows ptarfie, andfat, and lazy; he grows idle, and unfit for the exercifes ofroan. hood, or of his Calling, and the like. So itswhen a man is immoderately and exceslvelyfaft asleep with the cares of this Life, the lufts'of hisheart, the pleafuresof this prefent world, or whatfoever it is that luis him, and rocks this Cradle ; when he is thus asleep, he growsfat and purfie, his natural heat is gone,he fallsfrom his firft zcal,ànd affcflion, and define, and praaice. A las Brcthren, wemay fpeak to thefhame and forrow of many(Idoubt that hear me) that have exchanged their care ofgodlinefs ; that have exchanged their fecking of God in themeans, with company, with good-fdlowfhip, with Drunkennefs: And let the Lords Martinets come to them, and fay, Vpßeeper, call tepon thy God? whydolt thou notdo thyfrfi workt? Whyartthou lazy he grows angry as jenee was, that thought he did well tobe angry to the death. This is themifery of inan5l that live under the teachingof the Golpd; in thelight of the Gofpel. This is anal thee mark, and a,fignasleep, when wtcannot abideofany thing to bewakened. Todraw to a Conclufion: the Iailtlfe ofthis Point, itfe ryesto rouie, and to raife tie fróm this sleep and fccurity r this slumberthat isin the beltofus. And know my Brethren, I fpeaknot now to thofe that are out oftheChurch, and thole that are notorioufly wicked, thofe that are fcandalous; and rebellious to goodCounfel but I fpeak to thofe that live in the bofome of the Church, thofe that profefs goodnefs and godlinefs ; yea, thole that are Dikiples, and are near the fide ofCbrìfl : let this exhortation be to them to ralleand rouze themfelves out of this sleep. It is time, faith the Apoftle, thatwe rife cat off%ep. The fumofthis Exhortation I will propound, andthcndraw to a conciuíon. Frrfl confider how unprofitable a man, a Chriftian man is, when he is asleep : What isa manwhen he isasleep ? butthat there is hope ofawaking, and to cometo the actions of life again, a man that is asleep, he lives butthe life of a Plant, there is nothing but being and nourifh"ment: a waking Beaft is more profitable, but that (I fay) there is hope thatafterwards he will anake. So when we sleep, and slumber, and tumble, and tots our felves in dead fecurity, how unprofitable arewe to Gods glory,- and to our own felves? Saint Paul faith, that Onefimuswas unprofitable bt- fote his converfion: hutnow, faithhe, he su proiftable both es theeand mt. Aman that is asleep, is unprofitable: and certainly he that isasleep in fecurity and fin, this man is mothunprofitable tòGods' glory, andto his ownfoul. Secondly; confider when a man sleeps, and slumbers infin, how unfit he is for any Chriftian duty andexercire, for the main parts ofGodiinefs and Chriflianity t How unfit-isa sleepy man for the a&ions of life, andofhis calling?' andhow unfit andunable; and indufpofed is aman that sleeps i itiithéà&3pn dfïpi (i5liliffé'?
