402 The VitalFntentifin; or, tó all thofe that fpring from him fo likewife Chrift the fecond eí3dam by his Re- furredion he conveys life, anda quickning power to all his members, as we may fee t Car. 15. zt, zz. For fence by man came death, by Man camea l the refurreflionof thedead: for as in e. ldam all die: e4dam he communicates death and mortality to all that fpring from him, even fo in Chrifi(hall all be made alive. Chrift hecon- veys life to all his members; and they are all quickned by his Spirit therefore Chrift is called a quickning fpirit, t Cr ,1S. 45. Thefirfi Adam was made a' living foul, but the laf! Adam aquickning ,sf,irit ; not only a living, but a quickning fpirit. And this quickning powerand vertue,Chrift did manifeft before his refurrediou,by ráifing up three fromdeath, namely,by raiding theWiddows fon; Luke 7. andfairus his Daughter, Luke 8. and Lazarus here inthis chapter. And at his refürre&ion alto he nanile(ed this his quickningpower, in that he role not alone, butraifcd.tbcbo- dies ofmany ofhis Saints with him, many of his Saints arofe with him, and as they rote with Chrift their head,fo alto they afcended to glory together with Chrift their head, andthe refurredion oftheft it was aneffect ofthe refitrreòtion ofChrift, irwas by the power ofChrifts refurredion. Ofthefewe may read. Mar.zy.yz,S3. The graves opined andmany bodies of the Saints that ftept arofe, and came out of their graves after his refurredion, and went into the holy City and appeared tomany. Thus youhave the fief conclufon proved, that Chrift is the Author of the refur- redionof the body. Now in thenext place, the fecond conclufion is this; that, Chrifi is the Authorand Fountainofsfiiritsial life info. t; or fpiritual life. He is the Author of the Refurredion of the foul ; and the refurredion of the foulit is this, when theSpirit of grace (of which we were all deprived in Adam) returns again to the foul of a natural man, and fo quickens the man, that themanbe- gins to rife out of the grave of fin, and to lead a new life, a fpiritual life, the lifeof grace : this is the refurredion of the foul. Now that Chrift is the Author of this Refurredion alto, of this fpiritual Refur- redion: we maydemonftratethis by a multitudeofDivine teftimonies, but wewill fingleout fomefew ofthe chief, we need go no furtherthan this Evangelic, which affords plentiful teftimony for the confirmation of this truth : As in lob. 4. io; ThereChrift fpeakingto the woman ofSamaria, he Paid unto her; Ifthou haddeft known the gift of God, and who it is that faidunto theegive me drink, thou /houldef have titkeü of him, and he would havegiven thee living water. Here the Spirit of Chrift it is compared to living water, by an allufion to the water that continualy . fpringeth out of a Fountain. And the Spirit of grace is compared to living water fromthe effects ofit : becaufe the Spiritofgrace reftoreth fpiritual life to the foul, and then preferveth this life ; therefore it is living Water, and Chrift is as the Fountain of this water that yieldeth, and giveth this living, quickning water of the Spirit Again in 74. 5. zt'. there Chrift challengeth this power tohimfelf, As theFather railed up the dead, and quicknetb them ; fo the Son quickneth whom he mill. As Chrift when he was upon the earth,he railed whomhe would from the death ofthe body, fo now being inheaven, he raifeth whom hewill from thedeath ofthe foul. Yea, thevoice of Chrifts founding in the miniltryof the Word, accompaniedwith his quickning Spirit, is ofpower and efficacy to raife thofe that aredead in fins, as we may fee /oh. 5 z5. Verily, very, Ifay untoyou, faith Chrift, the hour it coming, . and now is, when thedead(hall hear the voice ofthe Son ofGod, andthey that bear itfleall live. ( Again in Joh. S. sS. there Chrift ftileth himfelfthe Breadof life, and the Living bread ; 7efstsfaid unto them, lam the breadoflife; and in verfe 48. lam the bread oflrfe ; and again verle St. 1 am the living bread. Chrift is the living bread, the breadof life, who as he hath life in himfelf, fo he communicates fpiritual life toall thofe that feedupon him.And hereis a broad difference between this Bread of life, ! and ordinary bread, ordinary food : for though ordinary food can prefervenatural life
