L,iieP (Jriinal. 4ó3 life, where it is, yet it cannotreftore life where it is not ; but Chrift is filch Jiving Bread, that he reftores life to thofe that are dead in fins; and preferves that life that he hathreftored, thus he is the living Bread. . , Again Job. 15. r. there Chrift compares himfelfto a Vine, and the faithful to fo many branches ? I am the true Vine, faith Chrift, andmy Father is the husband- man. And in verfe5. lens the Vine, ye are the branches. Now as the branch of the Vine fucks juice and lap from the [lock androot ofthe Vine ; fo all thefathful receive fpiritual juice and life, from Chrift their head. As eildamhe is a common root of corruption, and fpiritual death to all that come fromhim ; fo Chrift is a common rotit ofgrace, and fpiritual lifeto all tlíofe that are his members. And in this regard Chrift is compared to a head; and the faithful to his members. Collof7. 28. Chrift is the headof his body theChurch. Chrift is the head ; and the faithful are his members : therefore as in the natural body, the head that is the principium, . the fountain of fence and motion : it is thehead that by certainnerves and finews conveys fence and motion toall themembersof the body : fo in themyftical body the Church, Chrift is the head that conveys fpiritual life andnotion, toall that ate his members, toall the faithful. ThusYou fee thefecond conclufion explained and proved alto, that asChrift is the Author of the refurreftionof the body, fdhe is of the refurreftion of thefoul too, it is he thatraifeth the foulto fpirituallife. Now in the third place we are to Phew the reafon why thisdouble quickning power is here comprehended under oneterm, lain the RefurreElion. Now that this doublepower ofquickning, is to be underltood here under thisone term, we need not, I hope, ípend time to prove: for that Chrift fpeaks here of the fpiritual refur- reLtion, and the fpiritual life; this I take tobe evident from Chrifts own expofition in the words following; He that believeth inme, thoughhe weredead, yet fhall he live : He that believeth in me, though he were dead in fins and trefpaffes before, yet he ¡hall live the life ofgrace, therefore I am the Refurrc&ion. . Again, that the refurreftion of the body isnot here excluded, itmay appear from thefcopeand intent of therewords ofChrift ; for thefcopeofthefewords here, itto perfwade Martha that he was ableOf himfelf;by his own powerto raife up her dead brother,to reftorehim to life, faith he Ieim the Refurrefïion,I havepower to reftore fpiritual life to thefoul that is dead in fin, and this is thegreater work ; therefore I am able to reftorenatural life to the dead body, to reftore thebody that isdead in the Grave to life again. Nowthe reafons why this double power is here comprehended under one term, I eitnthe refurrettlion ; the chief réfánsltaketo bethefe two. - ' tirfl, thisdouble quickningpoweritherecomprehended under one erirkinregard ofthe Analogy, and proportion between thefe two, between thereftoringofthe bodyto life, and the reftoring the foul to life. Secondly, in regard of thecertain infeparable connexion between thefe two Firft,I fay,in regardof the Analogy andproportion between thefe two, the refur- reftion of the body, and of the foul; new the proportion and analogy coofifts e- fpecially inthefefourthings. Firft, as in the refurre&ion of the body, the living foul muff firft return to the deadbody, and quicken it before -it can rifeagain : fo here in the Refurreftion of thefoul, the Spirit Ofgrace mull return to the foul thatis dead'in fins, and quicken it before it can rifeagain : fo that there isa fimilitude in regard ofthe firft begin- ning, and principleofthis RefurreEtión. AgairK fecondly there is an analogy and proportion,' in regard ofthe point and term, the flute fromwhich the R:efitrreelion is : for as in the refurre&ionof the body, thebody rifethfrom the fiate ofcorniption, from the bondage of the Grave ; Sohere in this refurreftion of the foul, the foul and thewhole man rifeth from the !fate of fpiritual corruption, from the bondage offin. Thethird proportion is inregard of the citate to which a man rifeth : foras in the refurreftionof the body, a man Thad rife again without th.ofe infirmities that the bodyhadbefore, he flush rife to leadanother kind. offife, a glorified life t fo in this refurreftion ofthe foulthe (inncrrifeth, and is railedup' toleadanew kindof life; a fpiritual` ;. Why both comprehended under one term. T. In regardof the Analogy. Ï. 3-
