404 TheVital Foia11'laxri, or' z. In regard of the connefti- on. fpiritual life : and therefore it is called Newnefs oflife, Rom. 6.4.. that we fhould walk in newnef oflifer both in regardof the new principle, and fountain ofit, the fpringofgrace in the foul. And in regard of the neweffeds, and new operations; which are anfwerabieto the new root. Fourthly, there is aproportion alfo in regard of the perpetuityofboth : for as in the Referredion of the body, the body !hall rife an immortal body, not fubjedto death anymore ; fa here in the refurredionof the foul, when the (inner is reftbred to fpirituallife, he is railed up toa durable immutable eftate, he (hall continue to live thislife ofgrace, and the immortalfeed that is put into him, it shall never die : fo Chrift faith, verle 28. F that believeth inme, faith he, and fo lidetb, hr /ball never die, he is railed to an immutable efhate, to fuch a life as !hall never be fubjeet to fpiritual death again. Thus you fee that analogy,. and proportion between thefe two, and inthis refped theymay bothbe comprehendedfitly under one term. Secondly, in regard of the intallible connection between thefe two : 'for where- foever the refurredionof the foul to the life of grace goes before, there the refur- redion of the body to the fife ofglorywillcertainly fallow after : for asthe fpiri- tual death ofthe fouldid neceftirily draw after it the mortality , and death of the body, fo the fpiritual life ofthe.fouldothnecef srilÿ draw with it the immortality, and the refurredion of the body : therefore as in the Sacrament the naine of the thingfignified, is given to the figs, in regard of the' neer conjunction, and relation between them : fo here in regard ofthe neer conjunction between thcfe two, that theyarenever eparate, therefore they, may both fitly be comprehended under one term. Thus wehave endeavoured to expound the general doctrine in thefe three particulars. We have (hewed. you that Chrift is the Author and fountain of the Refurredion of the body : he hath thè quicknin power inhini wherebyhe is able to raife thofe bodies that are dead in the grave.' Then he is the Author ofthe Re- furreetionof the foultoo; heis able to quicken thole fouls that are dead in fins. And then we have (hewed the realmswhy thefe two,the Refurredion ofthe body, and of the foul, are both comprehended'underone phrafeof fpecch, l am the 7tgfur- reLlion. Now I come to theUfe and Applicationof that, that bath bindelivered. And the Ufe ofthe point is, Firff, for comfort. Secondly, for trial and examination. Thirdly, for exhortation and direction. vie I. Firft, theUfe of thepoint maybe for comfort here, here ismatter of found com- Cocmfort, fort to all thofe that are the faithful members ofChrift)efus : ifthus he united to Ovaby faith,Chrift is the Fountainof life,he will be theFountainoffpiritual life : thereforehere is comfort againft Death, againit the.deathof the foul, and againft the j death of the body. a. Againft the Comfort firft againft the death of the Soul, comfort againft fin, that is the ill of death of the all ills, and is the death of the foul. Ifthou be united toChrift; Chrift by his divine . foul, power he is able tofree thee from the powerand dominionof fm,from the bondage of fn. Doff thou complain that thy underftanding is dark and blind ? remember Chrift isable togive thee more light, Ephef. S. s4. Awake thorn that fleepefi , and (landupfrom the dead, and Chrifl(hall give thee light. Doff Thou complain that thy heart is hard and ftony ? remember that Chrift is able to foften thy hard heart, and to give thee a heart offlelh, as he path promifed, Ezek. 36.36. 1 nabtake a- way theirflony heart, andgive theman heart offiefh. Doff thou complainthat thy affections are unruly, and fee upon wrongobjets? remember to thycomfort, that Chtift is able to redific thefe affections, he is able toplant in thee the truelove, and fear ofGod, as be hash promifed, Deut.30.6. Iwill circumeifi thy heart, and the heart áfthy feed; that thou (halt love me with all thy heart, and with all thyAl. 4nd_ in fer. 32. 4o. Iwill put myfear in their hearts, that they (hall never depart fromme. Doff thou complain that thou can't not bear afflictionspatiently ? re- member that Chrift thy head, he is able toftrengthen thee andhe willdo it,as hedid the Apoile , 'Phil. 4. t3. faith he, I am able to do alltbingt through hrifl that flrengthneehmc.
