Lifi Original; 9 Secondly,be frequent,and fervent in Prayer for the Spirit ofgrace,and ofChrift: beforethou hear, pray ; and after thou haft heard,pray that the Spirit ofChriftmay accompany hisWord, that fo this maybe a means to awaken, and to quicken thee out of thy natural eftate, and to raife thee out of the deathof fin. Thou muff pray, toGod to give thee a hearing ear, and a believing heart: that fo thefound of the Word maynot be as the foundofa Trumpet in the ears ofa dead man,but that thou mayeft bequickned by the voice of Chrift. Andthough thou have continued a long time in tF.y fins,yet be not altogether difcouraged : remember that Chrift is able to raffe thee, though thou have continued never fo long in thy fns : for he that was able to raifel azartetthat was dead and buried; and now [finkinginthe Grave, he is able to raife.up thee alfo. Inthehaft place (in oneword) ifupon examination, thou find thou have attained to this fpiritual Refurreftion, thenhere is a ground ofexhortation. ToZHumility: Thankfuhiefs. Here is a groundof Exhortation to Humility and Thankfulnefs, to joyn then both together , becaufe they ufually go together : the proud perfon isalway un- thankful; andthe humble man is alway a thankful man. Now ifthou have attained to theRefurreftion thou haft great caufe tobe humble, and to be thankful. Firft, thouhaftgreat caufe tobe humbled,becaufe thouhaftnothing butthat thou haft received: thou haft great caufe to be humbled,becaufethanputteft not anyhand to this work, no more than the dead bodyof Latarne could help to the railingof him. No more than a creature being nothingcan help to its own creation ; no more can a (inner help forward this workofhis Refurreétion; therefore thou haft caufe to be humbled for not puttingthe leafthelpinghand to this work, it is wholly fupernatural. Therefore let not any one arrogate any thing to the powerof his free will, but remember the work is wholly fupernatural.
