4.2© The Death of Sida, and Obfervat. I. pbjrvat. z. ObJïrvat. 3. infcparably united together, all that are jultified, are fan&ificd. And upon this ground, the Apoftle frames two arguments to confute this error, taken from the i two parts of farR ification. The firft is from our mortifirátion, fromthe thirdveneto the end of thefeventh; and the argument runs thus. Thofe thataredead to fin, cannót fin that Grace may abound ; but alf that are in Chrift, are dead to fin ; therefore they cannot fin that Gracemay abound. Now that all that are in Chrift are dead to fin; he proves by their union with Chrift, teltified in Baptifm, and by the effcft of that union, which is conformity to Chrift ; that as aria was dead for fin; fo they are dead to fin. The fécond argument, is taken from the fécond part ofour fanftification, which is our quickning to a new life ; and that he handles in the 8,9,1o. verfes, and that') argument runs thus. Thofe that are quickned by Chrift to newnefs oflife, cannot fin that Grace may abound ; but all that are in Chrift, are quickned by Chrift to newnefs of fife ; therefore they cannot fin that Grace mayabound. That all that arc in Chrift are quickned to newnefs of life : he proves in erfe8. Ifwe be dradwitb Chr:fft, we believe that wefüall live with him!ill, by our union with Chrift, where. by there comes a conformity to Chrift in his refurreftion, as well as in his death. And from thefe prensifes, he infers by way Of application, the concluflon that is here in the words of the Text I havenow read to you ; likewife reckon Ye altoyour felves deaìl unto ?n, but alive to God, through ÿefuoCbrifl our Lord. As ifhe fhould fay, do not reftyour felves fatisfied in the bare knciSsledge ofthere thIngs,in the dif- courfe of them in general, but bring them to particular application, makethe cafe yourown ; what wefay ofdeath to fin, and ofnewnefs oflife, we fpeak to you, if ye be inChrift ; therefore you mutt make account of it to be your cafe, !skewife reckon yeyour [elvesdead tofn, but alive to God, through refus Chrifl our Lord. We fee now the coherence ofthe words with thofe that go before, and themain intent and (copeofthe Apoftle in the Chapter, wherein we might note divers things. The firft is out ofthe very connexion, that by veruseoftheunionofbelievers with Chriff, there IS in them a conformity to Chrift. They are made like unto him; he had laid before, that Chrift dicd, and role again; likewifereckon ye your (elves like him in this. Every one that is in Ghrift, is conformable to Ghrift, and madelike him. Then again fecondly, wernight note hence this afro ; that, ReElifed andfanitfled reafon, ever concludes to God, andfor God. Reckon ye, makeaccount, conclude this, fo the word fignifieth ; reafon thus,con- elude thus : asitisufed, Rom.3.2.8. We conclude (faith the Apoftle, wherethe'fame word is ufed) That aman isjuffiñed by Faith without the works of the Law. So, conclude this, rat on this conclufion, donot make it amatter ofconjefture, and opiniononly : but when you confider thingswifely, when you weigh things feri- oufly, you than fee great reafon to infer thofe things, from thefe premifes that God would haveyou infer.. Thereforewhatfoeverreaforaingis agamlt the Word, what foever difputes theminds of men upholdagainft any truth in Scripture, it is but the reafoning of corrupt reafon ; If reafon werefanftified,it would conclude, aszcor.g. we judge, if one diedfor all, then theythat live, fhouldnot live to themfelves, but to him that diedfor them. Whenmen come to deal judicioufly, and advifediy,,when they cometo concludè ofthings wifely ; theymill conclude then, that whatufe the Word and the Gofpel wouldhave themmake of any truth, that they will-makeofit, Likesoife reckonyc, judge thus. Thirdly, we mightnote hencethus much alto ; that, Theb4 and mop profitableknowledge of theScriptures, is in applying it toa mans own cafe, andperfon, andcondition. Reckonye alfoyou, felver, faith theApofilé; mal eaccount of thus much, that this
