Then this teacheth us to have an eye to Gods word in that which we do, if we would fatisfie confcience. j say, have an eye to Gods word : not onely to do that which it may be is in Gods word ; conicience counteth that to be no- thing : but to have an eye to Gods word. Confcience will not be iatisf ed with any obedience that we do if we have not an eye to sods word. Whatever we have an eye to betides, conicience knoweth it is nothing, if in all we have not an eye to the commandment or God : Though we do obey it, confci- ence looketh upon it as if vve did not obey it. It is onely Gods commandment and auchoriìte that bindeth confcience : and therefore nothing fatisfiecn conicience unleflc we have an eye i unto that. If we do nor aim at Gods will in doing what we do, confcience counteth our obedience as no obedience at all. A.s for example ; Ye chat are husbands, ye love your wives : but is it becaufeGod commandeth it ? Tt.maybe ye love them becaufe they love you, or becaufe your of caions are co them : Alas, this is nothing : Pagans and reprobates can do {o. But doye aim at thedoing of Gods will, who commandeth you ? O fay you, The Lord doth commandme. Ì do it. What of that ? Doye look at his commandment when ye do it ? If not ; be humbled, and knowye rnufI get grace to do fo, or ye are not obeduTnt toGod, neither will confcience let it down for obedience. Ye that are fervants, ye ferve your mailers : but do ye aim at Gods will ? thus, O the Lord h;atlk commanded me to be faitbfull and painfull in my fervice. Doth your foul look to this? It may be ye ferve them becaufe they are kind, and becaufe they pay you your wages, and the like : This is nothing to confcience : confcience looketh at thecommandment of God ; and if your fouls do not aim at the commandment of God, it will not fatisfie confcience.
