no A Treatife oftbe Affections. nothing too much to beflow upon him. A man may love God in a lukewarm meafure, hate fin in a lukewarm mea- fure, grieve for his corruptions, delire faith and repentance, delight in good duties, pity the miferies of others, fear to tranfgreffe Gods Commandment, a man may have all there affections thus in a lukewarm meafure : as this is difpleaing to God, fo it is not zeal. Zeal is a high meafure, the higheft Ì ftrain of all the affections. Thirdly, As zeal is the higheft meafure of all the affe &i - ons,fo it is with all the might of the foul. For, when a man does zealoufly affect any thing, his affection is mighty up. on it, Thou /halt love the Lord thy GodWith all thy heart, and With all thy foul, and With all thy might, Deut. 6.5. that is,', thou (halt love him zealoufly. Nimrod was a mighty bun ter, Gen.r o 9. that is, he was zealous at his hunting. Woe I unto them that are mighty to drink Wine, Ifa. 5.22. that is, that are greedy and zealous in the purfuit of their appetite in that kinde. David danced before the J ord With all his might, a Sam.6.14. that is, he did it zeah$ufly. Zeal is when the heart raifeth up its affections with all-its might on a thing. And therefore lukewarmneffe is called negligence in the Scripture : Curfed is he that doth the Warkyf the Lord negligently. As he that fights negligently, thews not all his might in his fighting, fo he that goes about any duty of the Lords fervice negligently, his heart does not (hew all his might in it. It puts notforth all the might of its affeIi- ons upon it. Lukewarmneffe then is the negligence of the affe&ion, and curled is the man that does the wonl<,of the Lord negligently, (ayes theText. But zeal is the might of the af- fection. Fourthly, As zeal is with all the might, fo it is the put- ting forth ofall the affeflions. When the heart affects a thing, and puts forth all its affections upon it, referving no part Of its affections for any thing elfe, this we call zeal: Herod a fe &edthe preaching of John, but he didnot affe&.it zea- bully, he did not put forth all his affe &ion upon it, he re- ferved i. With all e'.e mißhht of the foul, 4. The put- ting forth of all the affedious.
