The third f gn of zeal towards God is, it cannot be valet till it be a f f faired of Gods favo ar, and of Chrif.t. Thou art never earneft for God, if thou canif poflibly be quiet without af- furance of Chrift and of Heaven : the reafon is plain, I need not expreffe it. I know many a childe of God is not affu- red hereof, but there is never a childe of God under hea- ve »,but he isreffleffe till he be. Alas 1 he is never zealous for God, if he be quiet without affurance of Gods love in Chriff jefus. Can I zealoufly love him, whofe love to meI am not allured of ? for all that I know he will cut my throat, he will turn the foreft enemy I have, Icannot zea- loufly love him. No more unit thou zealoufly love God, as long as thou art quiet without the affurance of his love. What a wofull thing is this I haft thou but one foul,and art thou no more careful of it? art thou to live either for ever in heaven or hell, when thou dieft, in all torture and torment world without end ? and art thou no more
