Fourthly, by being pittious and affectionate towards the poore people, to let them lee how we piety their condition, as we fhould doe what wee can to make them leek their dam- ned eftate, as alto with bowels andcompatfion, labour that they may tie we doe pitty them ; and therefore Preaching fometimes is called Lamentation in Scripture, Ezek. 19.1. It may be people then may fay what a bead am J ; how does our Minister prtcy us I hee mournes over us, and be- wades ; what a wretch am J, that J doe not bewayle mine owne cafe ? O beloved, what a wofull thing is it, that any of us fhould perifh, to be damned for ever in hell 1 To lye in eternal! paints ! What a pitty is this ? Is it not much better yee fhould embrace the good word of God and beleeve and take Jelin Chrift, and be willing to doe any thing he would have you to doe, then to lye by it for ever in the paines of Hell, for the pieafures of finne for a feafon ? Alas it is for want of bowels, that we doe no more good. fifthly, by being deeply affeaed with the word of God, laying nothing on peoples backs, but what we lift up upon our owne fhoulders ; 1peaking the truth from the bottone of our hearts, uttering, the word ofGoe with feeling and with a contrite fpirit. O ifvve could drop our Sermons as dew down fromHeaven on our people ; this would be lively Preaching indeed, as the Prophet Ezekiel did, Rev dropt the word of God upon Jerufaleve, Ezek. 2r. 2. So if our Sermons did come dropping downe from us, as if they dropt downe from Hea- ven. O how coldly do our Sermons come from our mouthcs, we doe not Preach as if the Word came downe from heaven, at ifour hearts were no higher then our Pulpits. Laftly,
