Wilful Impenitency vaine words, and vain hopes to be faved ; for theft! things comes the wrath of God upon the children of difa- bedience. He does not fay, for not being renewed, for not being converted ; but for thofe things comes the wrath of God forth. He's angry for that, but his wrath comes generally forth tipon men for thefe things, becaufe they will not ufe the means : They will not give over thofe fins which are the hinderances to converfion; this is very reafonable. If a man were not able to do it, there would be Tome thew at leaf' of unreafonablenefs in Gods anger ; but there is not any thew of unreafo- nableneffe in his anger, when men will not buckle to the means which they may. When God commanded the Egyptians to fubmit and to be humbled, they would not ; he commanded them at leaf' to ufe the means, to let his people go, and they would not: you (hall fee how the Text layes his anger now was very reafo- nable. There is a fweet phrafe, Pfal.78.5o. He made a way to his anger ; in the Hebrew 'tis, He weighed a path to his anger. He weighed it in a balance ; Mark how rea- fonably and proportionably God is angry. He puts his anger and mens fumes in a balance, and weighs out the right meafure of anger. When a fervant forceth a Matter to be angry whether he will or no, he can not complaine his Mailers anger is unresfonable ; hee may go of his errands, and he will not; he may do this bufinefs, and he will nos : if he cannot do the bufi- neffe it felfe, yet he may ufe the means, and will not. Now, his Matters anger isvery reafonable, becaufe he forceth him to be angry ; As the churning of Milkbrin- geth forth butter, fa the forcing of wrath brina,eth forth. firife, Pro.3o.33. He does even churn his Matters paf- fions, and he forces the fame; as a churner forceth the Milk to become Batter; fo he flames ones kindne(% to become anger ; and therefore the anger is very reafonable.
