3g4 I Whether theDeuils Ypon the Thurfeday after knew Chrift orno. 144 4. 94. Math. 22. Two things . Whereofthe Iewes accufed Chrift. Lake z;. tobe prooued, whither they knew himor knew himnot Infauourof the former, towit, that theyknew him, we read in the Gofpell, That the Deuils had thrice confeffedChrift, Tobetheholy one of God, tobe the Sonneof God, and the Sonne ofthe molt Higheft. In this verle Chapter one of thefe foule Fiends faidvnto him, What haue we todoewith thee thou tefus f Ngzareth ? cwt thensome to defiroyvs ? t bowwho those art , euen the holy one of God. And now here , TheDads comewit ofmany, cryingandfaying, Thou art the Chrift theSonne ofGod. Inthe firft Chapter ofSaintMerke manyDeuils faid the like : And in thecigth Chapter of Saint cauthew, they calledhim the Sonneof the Higheft. Where itis to be noted,Thát albeit our Sauiout Chriftpermitted the Deuils to take thename intheir mouches, oftheholyOneof God,andof the Sonne of the Higheft ; yet did heneuerfuffer them topreach, that hewas theChrift. For a1thouhthenameof Mefliasandof Chrift beall one ; yet the namesofChrift and ofthe Meffias, were themolt notorious amongftthe Iewes. Both the Wife and the Ignorant didexpetk him and beleeued in him ; butall of them did not know thathe was tobe the SonneofGod. And therefore our Sauiour Chrift put this queftion to the greateft Doors amongftthem, pretending to proue the diuinitieoftheMefl'ras : What thinke yet ofChrifi ?Whofefonne is he? Againe, Thenameof SonneofGod, ofHoly, andof Higheft, maybe attri- buted toany holy Prophet whofoeuer, thatis the Sonne ofGod byGrace ; but thenameof Chrift was the nameof their Metfias, and oftheir King whom they looked for,and that he fhould come to redeeme Ifraell. And if the Deuillsdid publifhhim, they didwithall put in the hearts of the Jewsagreat hatredagainft Chrift ; as wellby feeing the glorieof their Meffiasplaced vpon fo meane and poore a man; as alto by teeing him thus applauded and proclaimed to the Worldby the Deuills , prefuming thereupon, that heehad madefome Coue- nant andconfederation with them. BeforePilate they layd two things to his charge : The one,Thathe made himfelfetheSonne ofGod ; and of this they made leaf} reckoning. The other, That he proclaimed himfelfe Kingof the Iewes. And this they held the heynoufetcrime. And Pilat hearingthat heewas the Sonneof God, begantobeaffraid; And wouldnot take this for a fufficient caufe to put him to death. But whenheheard that he tooke vpon himthe title ofKingof the Iewes, he prefently pronounced fentenceagainft him.And theRomane fouldiers, flou- ting at his Kingdome, put vponhim theenfignes of a King ; apurple roab onhis backe, a fcepter inhis hand, and a crowneon hishead. So that the thingwhich didmoft trouble them, was, The nameofChrift. And therefore they fayd vn- tohim, Si to es Chriflus, dicnobiaplans, 7f thou be Chrifi, declareithereopenly before thepeople, and tell vsplainelyof it. But becaufe hee would not prouokethem norgiue themoccaftonbefore hand, leaft they mightaccule him in theTribunal ofRome, hewould notmake anfwer vnto them, nor giue themany farther know- ledge that hewas theChrift. In fauour of the fecond , towit, That theydidnot know him ; wee haue on our fide the temptationofour Sauiour lefusChrift: foriftheDeuilshad known him, theywould not haue tempted him. Secondly, Theyknowinghim tobeethe Chrift and theMeffias , theymutt likewife know him tobee thenaturall SonneofGod : for theDeuils could not be ignorant of that inHel,which themoil learned in Iudaifine had attained to here
