Ground believed, and that with Joy, but it was the general Truths of the Gofpel only, they did not apply them to themfelves particu- larly, or if they did, not firmly, particular-' ly believe .; their Faith wanted Depth of Earth, it was but a flight Application : And therefore any Impreílion the Gofpel made, did foon wear away again. (3.) Becaufe the general Truths of the Gofpel and af- fent to them, could never be rationally con- ceived to bring forth the Effeas which are attributed to Faith, viz,. Peace with God : Re- joicing with great goy, i Pet. i. 8. What can general Propofitions do as to rejoicing the 1-leart, giving Peace to the Confcience ? True indeed, that there is a Saviour is Ground of Hope, and force Joy : But unlefs I be- lieve him to be my Saviour, my Soul will never be fettled, or refrefhed, or ftrength ned. Many a poor Soul that wins not up toafual Believing, but continues in the Place of the breaking `forth of Children, believes'all the Gofpel-Truths, and earneftly defires Salva- tion by Chrift, although they dare not med- dle with it as their own, and hence fiand at Diftance therewith, becaufe the Arm of the Lord is not revealed; and hence no Peace, Strength, or Settling, or little of it; why? The Cordial is not applied, it yields no Comm' fort,
