offavink Faith. 14 .of my Confidence in this Cafe, is not inChrift alone ; but when I have believed, then will I believe confidently.; becaufe I not only know what the Gofpe! reveals of Chrift, but I know I have believed in him : And therefore am I confident. Now, do you not mark, that your Confidence is not purely and folely bot- tomed on Chrift and the Gofpel Covenant of Grace, but partly on the Gofpel, and partly on Your Faith in Chrift ; and which Faith, tho,xnaterially an Evangelick Work, yet done, as it is here, legally, is a Work of the Law for therefore, fay ye, I have Confidence ; be-. caul I have calten my felf on Chrift ; fo that your cafting your felt- upon him, is the partial Ground Of your Confidence hill. I do not fay but, many do thus come to Chrift with Fears; and cannot get confidently believed on him ; but I am not fpeaking now of what Folkdo, but of what they ought to do, and what the Gofpel warrands them to do ; and through this it is that there are fo many Chri flans unfettled, and Rill in the Dark, and doubting of their Salvation ; becaufe ; the firongeft Grounds of Confolation are taken away from them, and they are not allowed to believe confidently, till they find the Fruits of Faith in their Souls, . which proceeding from a Faith aiding fo weakly, arid mixed with fo many Fears) are ordinarily little dif- cernable,
